A healthy maintained canopy not only manages the fruit to vegetative production but also impacts the finished wine product. Too much shade in a canopy area can lead to loss in yield, worsened fruit condition and creates a habitat for disease.
For existing vineyards we typically start with a canopy assessment using visual scoring and point quadrant to simulate a beam of light as it shines through the vine’s vegetative growth. Depending on the state of the vine’s conditions, weather, and time of year, we may recommend shoot thinning, leaf thinning, hedging, topping, and removal of lateral growth.
